How Spark Transformers Work
A spark transformer (ignition transformer) converts standard line voltage (typically 120V AC) into high voltage — usually 10,000 to 15,000 volts — at the secondary winding. This voltage jumps across a spark gap at the ignition electrode, creating an arc that ignites the gas-air mixture in the combustion chamber.

Spark Transformers vs. Hot Surface Ignitors
Equipment manufacturers choose between spark ignition and hot surface ignition based on application requirements:
- Spark transformers — instant ignition via electrical arc; common in commercial/industrial equipment with higher gas pressures
